Steps to reproduce

 

1) Open the Mari docs for Customizing a Brush and Configuring Brushes

result: Notice that the explanation for adding the brush to your shelf can be confusing for the user:

 

On the Tool Properties toolbar of your selected painting tool, drag the brush icon to the Shelf palette's shelf you selected previously.

 

As well as: 

 

You can then drag modified brushes from the Tool Properties toolbar to a shelf for your ongoing personal use, or for a particular project only

The documentation should explain in more details with visual representation of where to find the icon of the custom brush to drag onto the shelf
