ID 442381 - [S] From/To Avid: Clip overlapping the beginning of one with an effect will cause incorrect trim in/out in Flix, preventing the publish back to Avid

Follow

Problem summary

Clip on top of another clip with an effect will cause the latter to come into Flix with incorrect trim in and out, causing the Sequence to then not publish back to Avid.

Customer reported version
Flix 6.3.3

Steps to reproduce

1) Create a three panel Sequence Revision in Flix, and publish it to Avid.

2) In Avid, create a second track, and place one of the clips on V2 so it overlaps two clips on V1. It does not matter if it overlaps the first clip partially or entirely, but it must only partially overlap the second.

3) Add an effect on the second clip on V1 (the one partially covered by the clip on V2), for example a "Color Effect" like in the screenshot below:

4) Publish this Sequence back to Flix using "Render All Frames". The publish will be successful, but the trim in for the animated panel, and its overall duration will be incorrect.

Publishing this Sequence back to Avid will not be possible, as the AAF will fail to generate, with the following errors in the Server logs (values will vary):

time="20 Jul 20 16:38 BST" level=error msg="job failed, stopping chain" func="chain.(*JobChain).processJob:" Job="Publish image job" error="trimOut set to 11, only 9 media objects available on panel 42"

The error message is also incorrect, as the value displayed for the trimOut is not the actual trimOut value but trimOut-1 instead. This is confusing in cases where the difference between the total number of frames, and the media objects available for the animated panel is only 1, like in the error below:

time="15 Jun 20 16:12 BST" level=error msg="job failed, stopping chain" func="chain.(*JobChain).processJob:" Job="Publish image job" error="trimOut set to 12, only 12 media objects available on panel 552"

Expected behaviour
Trim in for the animated ref panel should be 0, and its total duration should match its duration in Avid.

Actual behaviour
Trim in for the animated ref is not 0, and its total duration does not match what it is in Avid. Error message in the Server logs can be confusing.

Workaround

Insert an "add edit" on the clip with effect on V1, so that it is cut where the clip on V2 overlaps.

If you have already imported the AAF to Flix, you can change the Animated Ref In and Out points. You can do that in the Properties tab for the panel in Flix. Animated Ref panels that have the In point already set to 1 should not be problematic. For the other Animated Ref panels, the In point should always be set to 1. The Out point should be the duration of the panel (or lower value). You can calculate the duration of those panels by using the formula (Out point number - In point number +1)
