Problem summary
Applying Items Masks on Imported References doesn't work as expected.

Steps to reproduce
1) Download the attached scene file and import it into Modo using "Import Reference..."
2) Expand the imported folder, right-click the Sphere item, and select Shade > Create Item Mask.
3) Go to the Shader Tree and expand the newly created Sphere item mask.
4) Select the material inside and change the Diffuse Color notice that it has no effect on the Sphere.
Expected behaviour
The Item Mask should work and apply the material.
Actual behaviour
The Item Mask doesn't apply the material effects.
