Problem summary
If panels further along in the sequence have thumbnail issues, the panels before will be showing in the Player as a slightly greyed-out thumbnail with the writing "Loading..." on top.

Steps to reproduce
Unfortunately, though this is a consistent issue, there are no specific steps to reproduce it as it is a consequence one that is hard to reproduce. This will happen every time there are panels with thumbnails stuck on 'Processing' in the sequence.
High load on the servers tends to reproduce this more often.
Expected behaviour
Panels should play back and be displayed normally in the Player until one that is processing is hit. At that point, the Player should display the last available panel and playback should stop.
Actual behaviour
The panels stuck on 'Processing' cause the panels before them to show in the Player in a corrupt way.
Workaround
The workaround is related to the panels stuck on Processing rather than the problem on the Player. Going to the Revision Browser level, then back into the revision should re-trigger the thumbnail creation for the panels stuck on 'Processing', therefore resolving both issues at the same time.
