Q100670: How to resolve "Source file not found" errors while installing Foundry products on Windows

SUMMARY

Since the introduction of MSI Windows installers with Nuke 14.0v1 and Mari 7.1v1, users have encountered an error similar to the following:

Source file not found: C:\Users\<userName>\AppData\Local\Temp\Nuke<version>-win-x86_64.zip.c3a\Nuke<version>-win-x86_64.1.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

This article will provide the steps that should be taken to prevent this error, and background as to why it occurs.

RESOLUTION

The correct method for installing recent versions of Nuke and Mari is to extract the downloaded .zip archive’s contents into a single location before running the .msi file within. For guidance on how to extract the .zip archive, please see the steps below:

  1. Right-click on the downloaded Nuke<version>-win-x86_64.zip or Mari<version>-win-x86-release-64.zip in the File Explorer, and then select the Extract All... option.
  2. In the dialog window that appears, click the Extract button and the archive will be extracted.
  3. Please run the .msi file from the new folder and the installation should be successful.

MORE INFORMATION

In older releases of Nuke and Mari, the distribution package for Windows was a .zip archive containing a single executable (.exe) file. As of Nuke 14.0v1 and Mari 7.1v1, the .zip archive downloadable from foundry.com now contains a Microsoft Software Installer (.msi) file and additional Cabinet (.cab) files.

Due to this change, the installation will only succeed if the .zip archive is fully extracted, where the .msi can find and access all of the .cab files in a single location.

When any file is run from inside a .zip archive, Windows will extract that file to a temporary location. As a result, the Nuke Installer may appear to be fully functioning when the .msi is launched from inside the .zip archive. However, the Windows automatic extraction process does not include the necessary .cab files (pictured below), and you will encounter the “Source file not found” error once the installation process begins.
