SUMMARY
When opening panels from Flix in Photoshop to make revisions, there are various workflows that could be used depending on the user's preferred process of working.
Because of this, there are three different options for Flix's Panel Open Behavior preference, located in Preferences > Third Party Apps > Sketching Tools > Photoshop:
- Open as Separate PSD - opens the selected panels in Photoshop as separate .psd files
- Open in Layer Comps - opens the selected panels in Photoshop as Layer Comps in a single .psd file
- Open in Timeline - opens the selected panels in Photoshop in the Timeline, as frames in a .psd single file
Depending on which option is chosen, there are different expectations for how panels should be updated, and this can lead to some confusion among users.
This article includes a video walkthrough explaining a common incorrect workflow when using the "Open in Layer Comps" option that results in new layers not appearing in Flix after saving changes in Photoshop, provides context as to why this occurs, and covers the expected process to update panels.
MORE INFORMATION
The video below will go over the following points in order:
- Where the “Open in Layer Comps” option is located and what it does
- What opening a single panel looks like when using that Panel Open Behavior
- Why adding a layer and saving will not show any visual changes in Flix
- How to correctly save new layers to the Flix panel when using the “Open in Layer Comps” option
- Why “Open in Layer Comps” is useful: opening and updating multiple panels from Flix
- Quick demo of the “Open as separate PSD” option for Panel Open Behavior, and why updating panels is different with this option
Please note that the list above is intended to serve as a written reference for the video's contents. To fully understand the workflow, we strongly recommend watching the video in its entirety:
To summarize, if you are not used to using Photoshop Layer Comps, we recommend keeping the default “Open as separate PSD” option for the Panel Open Behavior.
If instead you are comfortable with using Layer Comps and would like to open panels from Flix using that method, remember to always update the Layer Comp representing the panel(s) before saving.
